HEALTHEON OFFERS INFORMATION ON MEDICATIONS OVER THE INTERNET.
Under the agreement, Healtheon will feature information from Thomson's healthcare resources, the U.S. Pharmacopeia Drug Information (USP DI) and the Physicians' Desk Reference(R) (PDR). The collaboration will expand Healtheon's services to patients and their doctors with easy-to-understand information on prescription, non-prescription and herbal medications.
"Through this alliance with Thomson, we are providing the users of healthcare information -- the consumers and doctors -- with immediate access to the most trusted and comprehensive resources on drugs and herbal remedies," said Mike Long, chief executive officer of Healtheon. "This furthers our vision of a unified healthcare system where all the players have the information they need to make effective decisions, and the e-commerce capabilities they need to act upon those decisions."
On its consumer portal, Healtheon visitors can access the USP DI(R) Volume II Advice for the Patient(R), an easy-to-understand, accessible prescription-medications reference that is produced by Micromedex, a Thomson Healthcare Information Company, in conjunction with the non-profit U.S. Pharmacopeia. This resource allows online users to research The information a drug to learn of any possible side effects, interactions with other medications, why it's prescribed, even whether to take it on an empty stomach or with meals. The Web site also will feature the PDR(R) Family Guide to Non-Prescription Over-the-Counter Drugs(TM), which provides consumers with key facts, comparison and dosage information on more than 300 leading non-prescription remedies.
Healtheon's new consumer portal, available early this summer, also will include the new PDR(R) Family Guide to Natural Medicines and Healing Therapies(TM). The guide includes detailed, reliable information on 300 herbal remedies from the most authoritative sources, including Germany's Commission E, the leading regulatory body on herbal medications. Consumers accessing this illustrated reference will find complete information including each herb's scientifically verified applications, other common uses, special cautions and typical doses.
"This agreement will significantly extend consumer access to Thomson's authoritative healthcare information resources," said Raymond Zoeller, senior vice president for the Thomson Healthcare Information Group. "We are delighted to partner with Healtheon in improving the quality of health information available to consumers on the World Wide Web with the same trusted information their clinicians rely upon."
Physicians and healthcare professionals will gain access to a full range of pharmaceutical information from Thomson's extensive supersite, via Healtheon's provider portal. The alliance with Thomson enhances Healtheon's e-commerce and transaction services for physicians and healthcare professionals with critical drug data including FDA-approved information on 4,000 prescription drugs, 9,000 full-text articles, free searching of 11 million abstracts and daily medical news.
