HEALTHCARE IMAGING SERVICES, INC. ANNOUNCES OPENING OF NEW LITHOTRIPSY CENTER

MIDDLETOWN, N.J., Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthCare Imaging Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: HISS) today announced the opening of its first fixed-site lithotripsy facility, Kings Stone Treatment Associates, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
This facility has been developed in association with several leading urologists in the New York City area and offers the latest technological development in kidney stone management: the Medstone STS 1050. The Medstone unit offers a non-invasive technique which precisely locates and dissolves targeted kidney stones through shockwave therapy. The Medstone STS is the only U.S. manufactured system that utilizes spark gap technology, which effectively pulverizes stones with lower shockwave counts, resulting in reduced exposure to radiation. The unit features a dual-imaging system, enabling physicians to observe stone fragmentation through high resolution radiographic imaging and real-time ultrasound while minimizing treatment time. Unlike traditional lithotripters, the Medstone STS features a water immersion-free system, providing patients with greater convenience and safety. The stones can be fragmented with or without the administering of anesthesia, exclusively at the discretion of the physician.
Gobind B. Laungani, M.D., serves as medical consultant to Kings Stone Treatment Associates. Dr. Laungani is currently an attending urologist and director of the reconstructive and endourology division at the State University of New York's ("SUNY") Health Science Center and is the direcor of lithotripsy at SUNY's Lithotripsy Center.
Dr. Laungani has performed lithotripsy since its introduction in the United States in 1985 and has performed in excess of 1,000 procedures. Dr. Laungani has worked on several different lithotripsy systems including units produced by Domier, Siemens, Diasonics and Medstone, utilizing "traditional water bath" and piezo-electric technology.
Lithotripsy is the non-surgical process of crushing kidney stones small enough for the stone to be passed out externally by the urinary system. This is performed as an outpatient procedure and the entire process, including recovery time, is usually less than two hours. Until this modality was introduced to the market, kidney stones were removed surgically, causing great discomfort and a recovery period of several weeks. The process today eliminates the expense, pain and lengthy recovery time involved in the surgical method.
Kings Stone Treatment Associates represents HealthCare Imaging Services' first significant venture outside of the diagnostic imaging business. HealthCare Imaging Services, Inc. is a healthcare management and services company that supplies state-of-the-art health care equipment, facilities and services to physicians, hospitals, and other health care providers. The company currently owns and operates six fixed-site imaging centers in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland and four mobile MRI units operating in New York and New Jersey.
