HEALTH ZONE: What's up doc?

Byline: AMY ANDERSON

Q ARE there any known adverse effects to wearing the new style specialist contact lenses for a whole month without removal during that time?

A From optician, Trevor Rowley: No, there aren't, which is why they are such a revolution. Although they are quite new, these very exciting contact lenses appear to have solved the earlier problems associated with extended-wear lenses. They are made out of advanced silicon polymers that allow up to six times as much oxygen to reach your eye as conventional contact lenses. This means that, even when you are asleep, a normal healthy level of oxygen will continue to reach your eye.

The lenses are approved to be worn up to 30 days continuously, and with over 150,000 people now using them, all the evidence we have available indicates that these are just as safe as conventional soft contact lenses. As with any other contact lens, your eyes must be regularly checked by your eye care practitioner.

QI AM a vegetarian and am having trouble conceiving. Do you think this could be due to something missing in my diet. What can I eat to give me the best chance of becoming pregnant?

AFrom midwife Sue Jacob from the Royal College of Midwives: Being a vegetarian in itself should not prevent you from conceiving provided you eat a balanced healthy diet. The trouble is a lot of vegetarians do not do this. A healthy diet comprises a balanced intake of carbohydrates, proteins, fibre, minerals and vitamins at each meal. A serving from the choice of foods in each group, listed below, will ensure you have a balanced healthy diet.

Breads, pasta, potatoes and cereal are your basic carbohydrates. Fibre comes mostly from fruit, green vegetables and whole grains. Protein is in fish, dairy products, especially goat's milk and nuts and pulses. The Department of Health also recommends taking vitamin supplements of folic acid (400 micrograms) and Vitamin D (10 micrograms daily) up to a month before wanting to conceive. You should continue taking them for up to 12 weeks after pregnancy.

You may also need to make other changes to make sure you are in best of health to conceive. These include stopping smoking and drinking alcohol, taking regular daily exercise, at least 30 minutes a day, avoiding drugs and medicines unless for specific illness and relaxing through methods such as meditation and yoga.
