HEALTH MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATES EXECUTES 10-YEAR LEASE AGREEMENT ON FLORIDA HOSPITAL

   NAPLES, Fla., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Health Management Associates, Inc. (NYSE: HMA) today announced the closing on a 10-year lease agreement for the Heart of Florida Hospital, a 51-bed acute care facility located in Haines City, Fla.
    On June 30, 1993, the company consummated the acquisition of Parkview Hospital in Topeka, Kan., and on July 14, 1993, executed a definitive agreement with Galen Health Care, Inc. to purchase two acute care hospitals.
    These hospitals are consistent with HMA's established strategy of acquiring properties in underserved areas with a proven demographic need for these services.  The company has pursued this strategy since 1983.
    The two Galen hospitals which HMA will acquire are Sebastian Hospital, a 133-bed facility located in Sebastian, Fla., and Natchez Community Hospital, a 101-bed facility located in Natchez, Miss. Subject to the usual regulatory approval, closing should occur in late August.
    Health Management Associates is a major operator of general acute care hospitals in communities situated primarily in the Southeast and Southwest.  The company operates 18 facilities in 11 states with a total of 1,789 beds.
