HEALTH FOOD STORE 'BLACKOUT' IS 'CRUEL HOAX,' SAYS CENTER FOR SCIENCE IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) released the following:
We understand that some health food stores will be holding a "Blackout Day" on Aug. 13, during which store managers will refuse to sell certain dietary supplements purportedly being banned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The purpose of the "Blackout" is to organize support for legislation, prepared by industry lobbyists, that would reduce the Food and Drug Administration's authority over dietary supplement retailers and manufacturers. The bills, sponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Rep. Bill Richardson (D-N.M.), are opposed by consumer protection and public health organizations, including Consumers Union, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Society, and the American Association of Retired Persons.
CSPI supports the responsible use of truly beneficial dietary supplements, but opposes the Hatch/Richardson legislation because it will reduce the FDA's authority to protect the public from unsafe and misleadingly labeled products.
CSPI issued the following statement on the industry's "Blackout Day":
It is unfortunate that some health food stores are planning a cruel hoax on the American public. The blackout is merely an industry scare tactic used to organize support for legislation in Congress that will increase the industry's profits at the expense of the consumer's pocketbook.
CSPI is a non-profit, independent consumer advocacy organization supported by 600,000 members. CSPI was founded in 1971 and is located in Washington.
