HEALTH DIRECTOR ENDORSES SPECIALS TARGETED TO TEENS, PARENTS

LANSING, Mich., Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- State Health Director Vernice Davis Anthony today urged adolescents and their parents to watch two upcoming ABC specials aimed at educating the public about how to prevent the transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
"Teenagers are the fastest growing group at risk of contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases," said Anthony. "Unfortunately many of them are unaware of this fact. In order for young people to make intelligent decisions, they must be informed. Both of these programs provide forums in which factual HIV/AIDS prevention information can be presented and discussed. I commend ABC-TV and its affiliates as well as all the program sponsors, including the General Motors Corporation, for making these specials possible."
The first special, "IN A NEW LIGHT '93," will air Saturday, Sept. 4. Hosted by Arsenio Hall and Paula Abdul, the show will feature leading film, theater, music, and sports personalities, along with leading government health officials and ordinary Americans, who will present their personal stories about how AIDS has touched their lives and help people view the disease "in a new light."
On Tuesday, Sept. 7, 10-11 p.m., WJRT-TV 12 (Flint), WLAJ-TV 53 (Lansing), WZZM-TV 13 (Grand Rapids), WXYZ-TV 7 (Detroit), WGTU/WGTQ-TV 29/8 (Traverse City) and on Sept. 14, WOTV-41 (Battle Creek) and WOOD-TV 8 (Grand Rapids) will broadcast "AIDS 101: Tammy Boccomino Talks With Teenagers." This special program is being produced by WXYZ-TV/Channel 7, Detroit, along with independent producers Sue Marx and Char DeWolf of Sue Marx Films.
