HEAD OF 'WOMEN IN FILM' SAYS 'SEXPLOITATION' HAS USURPED WOMEN'S ROLES IN HOLLYWOOD

/ADVANCE/ NEW YORK, March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- "Women can't do much worse than we did last year," lamented Harriet Silverman, executive director of the L.A. group Women in Film, referring to the scarcity of good film roles for women in Hollywood this year.
Interviewed for an article on the Academy Awards in this Sunday's Parade, Silverman explained, "In the 1940s and `50s, there were powerful screen characters played by Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford. Now we have sexploitation films with Madonna and Sharon Stone." In fact, six of the 10 nominees for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress this year are from Australia, England and France.
