HC ASKS GANGULY TO PAY UP.

FORMER India captain Sourav Ganguly will have to shell out Rs 43.75 lakh for a piece of land in Salt Lake in the northern fringes of the city, on which he is planning to set up a school -- Wissen International School -- after a directive from the Calcutta High Court on Monday.

The division bench also observed that there was no arbitrariness in the action of the state in allotment of the land to Ganguly.

" But Ganguly would have to pay a premium of Rs 43.75 lakh in respect of the subsequent plot of land at the present rate," the court directed.

For one year, local citizens of Salt Lake have been raising their voice against the allotment of the plot at CA Block in Salt Lake by urban development minister Ashok Bhattacharjee. A Public Interest Litigation ( IPL) was also filed against the allotment of the plot to Ganguly in the high court in October. The members of CA Block Citizens' Association alleged that the allotment was illegal and the plot was handed over to Ganguly without proper advertisement, as required in such cases.

The association alleged that Ganguly had been provided land in BF block in Salt Lake, but later he made a request for a substitute plot in CA Block. Bhattacharya considered his request and Sourav was given the CA block plot, allegedly without following norms. On Monday, a division bench comprising chief justice MS Shah and justice PC Ghose directed the former Indian captain to pay the amount within six weeks, failing which the lease shall stand terminated.
