HC's ' Padma Bhushan' barb stings UP govt.

THE Allahabad High Court has slammed the Uttar Pradesh government's move to acquit those accused in the Varanasi Sankat Mochan and Cantt Station blasts saying that it is the court which is authorised to decide such matters.

" Who will decide who is a terrorist and who is not? Let the matter be decided in the court," the HC observed.

" Is the government encouraging terrorism by taking steps to withdraw cases against accused persons? Today you are withdrawing casesC* tomorrow you will confer Padma Bhushan on them," the bench said while hearing a petition challenging the move of the Samajwadi Party ( SP) government to let off the Muslim youths who were arrested for their alleged involvement in Varanasi serial blasts of March 7, 2006.

The petitioners had moved the court against the recent decision of the state government which had circulated a letter dated October 31, 2012 to its various cells, including the legal department and district administrations, to initiate the process to release the accused persons.

The primary objection of the petitioners was against the plan of the government to release Waliullah and Shamim, two Muslim youths who were allegedly involved in keeping explosives or in Varanasi's bomb blasts.

Former chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati said: " I think this move of the SP government is against humanity. But the court will not let this happen."
