HBO INDEPENDENT PRODUCTIONS' SLATE INCREASES WITH TWO NEW SHOWS FOR
ABC AND FOX: PROGRAMS TO DEBUT INITIALLY ON HBO
LOS ANGELES, Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Using what it believes to be a unique programming strategy, HBO Independent Productions, Inc., a subsidiary of HBO, Inc., will begin pre-production on two new half-hour comedy specials that will debut initially on HBO, then subsequently air on the ABC Television Network and Fox, respectively, it was announced today by Chris Albrecht, president of HBO Independent Productions, Inc., and Bridget Potter, senior vice president of HBO Original Programming.
The two programs, "The Road Warriors" (working title) (ABC) and "The Ben Stiller Show" (Fox), will first be showcased on HBO as specials during the third quarter of 1992 while serving as series prototypes for ABC and Fox. The specials will be jointly financed by the HBO network and the participating broadcasters.
"This strategy gives programmers an opportunity to develop shows that aren't designed to go through the traditional development process," explained Albrecht. "Not only are these shows appropriate fare for HBO, they are also suitable as specials and prototypes for our commercial network partners."
"Over the last few years, comedy stars such as Roseanne Arnold and Jerry Seinfeld have used HBO to break new ground through their specials, then successfully moved to network television where they now thrive," said Potter. "Once again, we're offering broadcasters the chance to share and gamble with HBO in the development process, at an earlier stage," she added.
Colin Quinn and Mario Joyner star in "The Road Warriors," which follows the duo as they perform in comedy clubs around the country while searching for the meaning of life. "It's an on-the-road reality comedy that's character- and story-driven, depicting the real-life adventures of our stars," said Albrecht. Quinn (MTV's "Remote Control") and Joyner (MTV's "Half-Hour Comedy Hour") star, with Peter Segal executive producing.
"The Ben Stiller Show" features MTV's Ben Stiller as a transplanted New Yorker who arrives in Hollywood to seek fame and fortune. Shot single-camera style, the short comedy sketches with story wrap-arounds feature an ensemble cast and weekly guest stars. Stiller and Judd Apatow serve as executive producers.
HBO Independent Productions, Inc. was created by its parent company, Home Box Office, Inc., in September 1990 to supply original programming to a wide range of broadcast and cable networks, and to develop and produce comedy theatrical features. HBO Independent Productions' first network series, "Roc," debuted on Fox last August.
