HAYES WHEELS INTERNATIONAL RECEIVES $5 MILLION GM CONTRACT; BEGINS SHIPMENTS FOR FORD MUSTANG

ROMULUS, Mich., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Hayes Wheels International (NYSE: HAY) has been awarded a contract valued at more than $5 million annually to supply fabricated aluminum wheels to General Motors Corporation (NYSE: GM) for several of its 1997 models. The company has also begun shipment of fabricated aluminum wheels to Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) for the new Mustang, under a contract valued at more than $3 million. The announcements were made today by Ron Cucuz, Hayes Wheels president and chief executive officer.
 ULTRA-LIGHT SPARE FOR GM
According to the terms of the contract with GM, Hayes Wheels will produce fabricated aluminum spare wheels for GM's 1997 model year U-van lineup, including the Chevrolet Lumina, Pontiac Transport and Oldsmobile Silhouette. The company will also export the same spare wheels to Europe for use by Opel and to Australia for use by GM Holden.
The Hayes Wheels fabricated aluminum spare wheel is an ultra-light wheel that weighs less than 10 pounds -- making it approximately 45 percent lighter than a traditional spare wheel.
WEIGHT SAVINGS FOR FORD AND CHRYSLER
Hayes Wheels has also begun shipment of its ultra-light fabricated aluminum mini-spare wheels to Ford for the 1994 model year Mustang. The company also supplies its lightweight fabricated aluminum spare wheels for the Lincoln Mark VIII and will supply spare wheels to Chrysler for the 1995 Chrysler mini-van.
"The recent fabricated aluminum wheels contracts with GM, Ford and Chrysler underscore the rapid growth potential of this unique, lightweight option to steel wheels -- in the U.S. and internationally as well," Cucuz said. "In 1995, we will also begin shipping fabricated aluminum wheels to BMW in Europe from our Autokola joint venture company in the Czech Republic."
Hayes Wheels is a leading independent producer of steel wheels for the North American market, the largest independent North American exporter of aluminum wheels to Japan, the second-largest producer of aluminum wheels in North America and the leading supplier of cast aluminum wheels in Europe.
