HAYES AND SILICON SYSTEMS REACH AGREEMENT ON SUPPORT
 FOR INDUSTRY STANDARD ESCAPE SEQUENCE
ATLANTA, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Hayes Microcomputer Products, Inc. and Silicon Systems, Inc. today announced a licensing agreement permitting Silicon Systems to incorporate the Hayes Escape Sequence With Guard Time Patent, also known as the Heatherington '302 Patent, into its modem chip sets.
Under the agreement, Silicon Systems has taken a license that will benefit its modem chip customers and addresses both past and future obligations of those customers to Hayes under the Hayes '302 Patent.
The Hayes escape sequence technology, first introduced in Hayes Smartmodem products in 1981 and issued as U.S. Patent Number 4,549,302 on Oct. 25, 1985, is now a data communications feature acknowledged as an industry standard for modems, ISDN and other data communications applications with over 26 million units shipped to date worldwide. Hayes holds corresponding patents to the Hayes '302 Patent in Canada (No. 1,186,080), France (No. E0067395), Germany (No. P3279750.8-08), Italy (No. 21810BE/89), and the United Kingdom (No. GB0067395), including registration of the United Kingdom patent in Hong Kong.
"Hayes and Silicon Systems have enjoyed a long and successful relationship beginning in 1988 with a technology partnership," said Hayes President Dennis C. Hayes. "Because our two companies were in licensing negotiations for the '302 Patent long before Hayes and Rockwell began similar discussions, provisions were made within Rockwell's exclusive arrangement to allow the completion of the Hayes/Silicon Systems agreement."
"This agreement supports our goal to meet and exceed the demands of discriminating modem IC customers," said Silicon Systems President and CEO Alan V. King. "Licensing of the Hayes '302 Patent at no cost to our customers ensures installed-base compatibility and avoids unsatisfactory performance brought on by using alternative escape sequences."
Customers who purchase from Silicon Systems modem chip sets which contain the Hayes '302 technology will be eligible to participate in the Hayes '302 Escape Sequence Patent Certification Program. In addition, these customers will be able to utilize the Hayes '302 Escape Sequence Patent Icon which is available to licensees of the Hayes '302 Patent to identify licensed product containing the Hayes patented Improved Escape Sequence With Guard Time technology.
Best known as the leader in microcomputer modems, Hayes develops, supplies and supports computer communications equipment and software for personal computers and computer communications networks. The company distributes its products in over 60 countries through a global network of authorized distributors, dealers, mass merchants, VARs, systems integrators and original equipment manufacturers.
Silicon Systems, a TDK group company, specializes in the design and manufacture of application-specific, mixed-signal integrated circuits (MSICs/R/) used primarily in storage products, communications and automotive electronics.
