HAWORTH, INC. FOUNDER AND CHAIRMAN G.W. HAWORTH RECOGNIZED AS 1993 OUTSTANDING ENTREPRENEUR BY UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN

HOLLAND, Mich., June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- One of Michigan's most successful entrepreneurs, G.W. Haworth, founder and chairman of Haworth, Inc., was recognized with the 1993 Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award from the University of Michigan.
In its third year, the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Award recognizes the achievements of a university alumnus or alumna who has started and built a successful business. The award is given by the University of Michigan School of Business Administration.
G.W. Haworth started his company in his garage workshop in 1948; today, Haworth is a leading office furniture and seating manufacturer with worldwide distribution, sales exceeding $650 million and 5,000 members (employees).
He began his career as an instructor in Western Michigan, teaching industrial arts to high school students. In his spare time, he built cabinets and displays in his garage. This hobby, fed by his entrepreneurial spirit and hard work, grew into a flourishing business.
"It is quite an honor to receive the Excellence in Entrepreneurship from the University of Michigan. I am a very fortunate man because I was able to fulfill the dream of having a successful business. Hard work and customer satisfaction were the keys to success," said G.W. Haworth.
At 82, G.W. Haworth still puts in a 40-hour work week and says he has no plans to retire. When asked about retiring, he often responds, "I started this business as a hobby, why shouldn't I continue it as a hobby?"
Born in Alliance, Neb., G.W. Haworth spent most of his youth in Del Norte, Colo. He moved to Benton Harbor, Mich., where he finished high school. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1937 with a B.A. in education and received an M.A. in education administration from the University of Michigan in 1940.
Education has long been a priority to G.W. Haworth. This commitment to education is illustrated in his company's philanthropic initiatives to education. Haworth has provided more than $6 million in funding educational initiatives over the last six years. A corporate and family gift of $5 million was donated to Western Michigan University's new College of Business, which has been renamed the Haworth College of Business.
The company annually awards college scholarships to Haworth members, spouses and children. Haworth also recently formed a partnership with Apple Computer and Holland Public Schools to create a productivity center for business education in Holland High School.
The year 1993 is a very special in many ways for G.W. Haworth and Haworth, Inc. The company is celebrating the 45th anniversary of its founding and it became the first U.S. office furniture manufacturer to achieve ISO 9001 certification. ISO 9000 series standards are universal quality standards adopted by 59 countries around the world. Haworth was also recognized as one of the 100 best companies to work for in America.
