HAUSER TO DOUBLE TAXOL PRODUCTION CAPACITY AT NEW FACILITY

HAUSER TO DOUBLE TAXOL PRODUCTION CAPACITY AT NEW FACILITY
BOULDER, Colo., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Hauser Chemical Research

Inc. (NASDAQ: HAUS) announced today that it has been requested by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (Bristol) (NYSE: BMY) to increase the capacity of its new taxol processing facility from 100 kilograms of taxol per year to 200 kilograms and to produce 30 kilograms per year at the original facility. The increase will bring Hauser's total Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) taxol production capacity to over 230 kilograms per year with commitments from Bristol to purchase all taxol produced through August of 1994. The scale-up to 200 kilograms will require satisfactory validation of an expanded purification process and the acquisition of equipment.
Hauser signed a Supply Agreement with Bristol in August of 1991, valued at a minimum of $56,000,000 over a three year period with two, two-year extensions. The agreement was amended Aug. 1, 1992, to reflect administrative changes. Hauser is entering the second year of that agreement and has recorded $22,460,475 in revenues through April of 1992, while ramping up its production levels. The amended contract is valued at over $100,000,000 through August 1994, based on 1992 prices and increased commitments from Bristol.
Bristol's request is prompted by the steady progress of taxol, a promising anti-cancer drug, toward the marketplace. On June 22 of this year, Bristol filed a New Drug Application (NDA) with the Food and Drug Administration seeking approval to market taxol.
Taxol has shown effectiveness in clinical trials against refractory ovarian cancer, breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer as well as other cancers. Currently the source of the drug is the bark of the Pacific yew tree which Hauser collects from Bristol. Hauser is the only GMP producer of bulk taxol for Bristol and has also recently announced its ability to extract and purify taxol from alternative sources such as yew needles and cultivars (seedlings). Over 5 million seedlings have already been planted by Weyerhaeuser Co. in anticipation of future supply. Hauser has also developed technology and is planning for the production of taxol precursors including 10-deacetylbaccatin III from several sources. Precursors are useful in the semi-synthesis of taxol.
