HAUSER RESPONDS TO RECENT INQUIRIES CONCERNING ALLEGED THEFT OF COMPUTER INFORMATION

BOULDER, Colo., Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Hauser Chemical Research Inc. (NASDAQ: HAUS) responds to inquiries resulting from the arrest of a former Hauser employee for allegedly stealing proprietary computer information from the company. Tom Scales, president and chief operations officer of Hauser, stated, "We are pleased with the Boulder Police Department's prompt action in the investigation and arrest of our former employee. Part of the investigation centered on recovering the information that was allegedly taken by the former employee, and we believe that substantially all the information has been recovered. We feel that we have put a cap on the dissemination of the information by the quick action that was taken." All efforts were and are currently being taken to protect the company's proprietary information.
"Recent quotes attributed to company officials implying that the theft would 'sink the company' were inaccurate," said Scales. "The computer information, without sufficient technical expertise and know- how about the company's technology which is possessed by only a few people at the company, would not be usable," stated Scales. The company's DL/SE(TM) and LLF(TM) processes are complex, and the body of knowledge relating to their operation with respect to a variety of natural materials is extensive. In addition, Scales noted that the quoted $60 million value of the proprietary information related to the company's annual sales and that the actual value is difficult to determine with precision.
Sue Maynard, Hauser's director of Human Resources, noted that the company relies on standard internal procedures and trade secret laws to protect its proprietary information. Maynard stated that "The company had no choice but to involve the Boulder Police Department when it was discovered that the computer information had been taken. We take our proprietary information very seriously at Hauser and do everything necessary to protect it." The company protects its proprietary technology and know-how through established security practices and confidentiality agreements with its employees, consultants, strategic partners, and technical advisors.
Hauser is the leader in specialty products from natural sources using its proprietary technologies. These products include natural flavor extracts for the food and beverage industry as well as natural compounds for pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and veterinary applications. The company also provides interdisciplinary laboratory testing services, chemical engineering services, and contract research and development through Hauser Laboratories. The company is based in Boulder.
