HAUSER ANNOUNCES 1993 YEW HARVEST PLAN AND MORE EFFICIENT PRODUCTION OF TAXOL

BOULDER, Colo., March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Hauser Chemical Research Inc. (NASDAQ: HAUS), the only commercial Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) producer of bulk taxol for human use, announced today at the International Yew Resources Conference in Berkeley, Calif., that the 1993 yew harvest program will focus on harvesting from private lands to supply taxol in the future and that it has made significant progress in the reduction of raw materials needed for production of taxol.
According to Phil Hassrick, executive vice president of Hauser Northwest, "Our harvest program for 1993 will focus on harvesting yew from private ownerships. In subsequent years, we will continue to utilize this valuable resource from private lands while developing other sources of cultivated raw material from yew nurseries."
Hauser's chief technical officer, Dr. Randy Daughenbaugh stated, "We have greatly reduced the pounds of raw material needed for production of each kilogram of taxol." Hauser currently uses about 13,000 pounds of yew bark to produce 1 kilogram of taxol which is significantly less than the 35,000 pounds required per kilogram in 1990. The semi-synthesis of taxol from taxanes produced concurrently in Hauser's process, could reduce the raw material needed in the future to 5,000 pounds for each kilogram assuming regulatory requirements can be met.
"Hauser has applied for patents for the conversion of naturally occurring taxanes to taxol and other compounds. The company has also derivatized naturally occurring taxanes to produce unique taxol analogs that show excellent tubulin binding activity and cytotoxicity in vitro," said Daughenbaugh.
Hauser Chemical Research is a chemical processor, specializing in the extraction and purification of high value natural products using its proprietary technologies.
