HASSAN NAMED GROUP V.P./GLOBAL PHARMACEUTICALS OF AMERICAN HOME PRODUCTS CORPORATION; ESSNER SUCCEEDS HASSAN AS WYETH-AYERST PRESIDENT

NEW YORK, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- John R. Stafford, chairman and chief executive officer of American Home Products Corporation (NYSE: AHP), today announced that Fred Hassan has been named group vice president in charge of AHP's global pharmaceutical business.
Hassan, 47, had served as president of Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, AHP's domestic pharmaceutical division, since 1989. He will be succeeded by Robert Essner, currently executive vice president of Wyeth- Ayerst.
Hassan's position is newly created as part of AHP's ongoing effort to streamline its worldwide businesses in an increasingly competitive global
environment. He will oversee the management of AHP's domestic and international pharmaceutical divisions, as well as worldwide research.
"Fred Hassan's mandate is to continue positioning AHP to benefit from the rapid changes affecting the pharmaceutical industry brought on by health care debate in America and cost containment in the U.S. and Europe," said Stafford. "While this is no small challenge, there is no one better qualified than Fred to guide this vital area of our business. He possesses the foresight and managerial skills so essential for maximizing the opportunities created by the evolution of our industry."
During Hassan's four years, Wyeth-Ayerst has moved to the nation's number one position in dispensed prescription volume via acquisitions, strategic alliances and the successful introduction of new products and indications. Research and Development was also strengthened by accelerated investments, by biotechnology alliances (such as with Genetics Institute) and by key recruitments. While continuing its increased investments in R&D, Wyeth-Ayerst remains a relatively low cost provider -- its average price per prescription has remained at or below the industry average.
Prior to joining Wyeth-Ayerst, Hassan served as chief executive officer of Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation, culminating a 16-year career there. He earned an MBA from Harvard University in 1972 and a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of London, U.K., in 1967. In his new position, Hassan will continue to report to Bernard Canavan, M.D., president of American Home Products Corporation.
Essner, 45, joined Wyeth-Ayerst in 1989 as senior vice president of sales and marketing. He was promoted to executive vice president of the company in 1991 and has been responsible for the commercial operations of Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, while serving as deputy to the president on business matters. Previously, Essner was COO of Sandoz Pharmaceuticals Corporation.
Essner is a graduate of the University of Miami, Oxford, Ohio, and received a Master's Degree from the University of Chicago. As Wyeth- Ayerst President, Essner will continue to report to Hassan.
In addition, David Olivier, president of Wyeth-Ayerst International, and Robert Levy, M.D., president of Wyeth-Ayerst Research, will also report to Hassan. Whitehall International management will continue to report to David Olivier.
