HARTMARX CORP. NAMES NEW CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
CHICAGO, July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Elbert O. Hand, president of Hartmarx Corp. (NYSE: HMX), has additionally been named its chairman and chief executive officer, succeeding Harvey A. Weinberg, the company announced today. Hand has served on Hartmarx's board of directors since 1984 and as president and chief operating officer of the company since 1987.
Hand stated: "The immediate focus of the company must be on building our successful wholesale and manufacturing businesses while divesting or closing unprofitable, nonessential or nonsynergistic retail operations. The corporation's retail group includes a nucleus of profitable stores whose viability continues to be compromised by a number of poorly performing stores. This issue will be addressed immediately."
Weinberg said: "I have worked closely with Bert Hand for over 20 years; he on the manufacturing side of the business, I on the retail side. As the company continues to implement changes in its strategic course and refocuses its efforts predominantly on building its highly successful manufacturing and wholesaling companies, the time is now right for me to explore other personal and professional opportunities in retailing. These are difficult times, but I have complete confidence in the solid management team I have worked with for many years and the future of the company under Bert's leadership."
Hand, 53, joined Hart Schaffner and Marx in 1964 as a member of its sales and marketing staff. He was named vice president and national sales manager of Hart Schaffner & Marx in 1970, group vice president in 1973, executive vice president in 1976 and president in 1980. He was appointed president and chief executive officer of the Hartmarx Men's Apparel Group in 1985 and president of the company in 1987.
Hand serves on the board and as chairman of the American Apparel Manufacturers Association. He is a board member of the University of Illinois at Chicago Advisory Council, chairman of the council's Minority Affairs committee and a member of the university's Chancellor's Advisory Board. He is also a board member of the Better Government Association; a member of Rush Presbyterian-St. Luke's Heart Institute Leadership Committee; and is president of the Hamilton College Alumni Association.
A native of Ardsley-on-Hudson, N.Y., Mr. Hand graduated from Hamilton College with a B.S. degree in 1961. He and his wife reside in Chicago.
Weinberg, 54, became chief executive officer of the company in 1987 and its chairman in 1990.
Hartmarx Corp. is the nation's leading manufacturer and retailer of quality men's and women's apparel.
