HARSCO CORPORATION'S DEFENSE GROUP AWARDED CONTRACT MODIFICATION

HARSCO CORPORATION'S DEFENSE GROUP AWARDED CONTRACT MODIFICATION
HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Harsco Corporation (NYSE: HSC) BMY-Combat Systems Division (BMY-CSD) has been awarded a major modification to a current U.S. Army development contract valued in excess of $40 million.
The award enlarges the scope of a $20 million contract the Division received last year to develop a Combat Mobility Vehicle (CMV) for countering obstacles and enemy minefields on the battlefield. Under the terms of the modified program, which is now valued at approximately $60 million, BMY-CSD will expand upon the CMV technology now under way by incorporating improved armor protection, depth sensing electronics and systems survivability measures. To better reflect its more specialized counter obstacle, counter mine orientation, the Army has redesignated the vehicle the "Breacher".
The Breacher will be built on the M1 Abrams tank chassis and equipped with a full-width mine clearing blade and an hydraulically- controlled excavating arm. As a complement to advancing armor and infantry, the vehicle must be capable of quickly neutralizing minefields, earthen berms and anti tank ditches. BMY-CSD's familiarity with mine clearing technology stems from its successful management of the Counter Obstacle Vehicle (COV) program. Under the scope of the revised program, the Division will act as overall systems integrator and prime contractor in conjunction with such industry teammates as Westinghouse, Gradall and Du Pont. At the conclusion of development and evaluation in mid-1995, a production decision will be made which could lead to production toward the end of the decade.
Harsco Corporation is a diversified, international, industrial company headquartered in Camp Hill, Pa. The company's 11 divisions provide products and services for defense, industrial, commercial and construction applications from more than 260 facilities in 36 states and 14 countries.
