HARRIS WINS $35 MILLION SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS CONTRACT

MELBOURNE, Fla., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) has been awarded a contract valued at up to $35 million by Rockwell International Corporation (NYSE: ROK) to design and develop the communications, onboard processing, and telemetry systems for the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center's Brilliant Eyes program.
Rockwell received a $265 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to lead one of two contractor teams that will design and demonstrate a Brilliant Eyes system. Under the terms of the Harris contract, three Harris divisions will provide all the communications systems on the satellite and in ground-based support systems.
The six-year demonstration/validation phase program calls for two contractor teams to produce and launch two satellites in the 1996-1997 time frame. The winner of this competition will be selected by the USAF for the Engineering Manufacturing and Development phase to produce dozens of satellites.
As a part of the Global Protection Against Limited Strike the Brilliant Eyes satellite system will be the primary sensor for the National Missile Defense segment. Operating in the visible and infrared wavelengths, it will be used to gather data to cue ground based interceptors for theater and national missile defense.
The lead Harris division is Government Aerospace Systems Division, which will design the communications systems on the satellite. This will include antijam V-band satellite-to-satellite crosslinks and satellite-to-ground, encrypted, X-band up- and down-links. The division also will provide a radiation-hardened, RH-3000 onboard processor, as well as overall space/ground communications systems design. Government Communications Systems Division will design the ground terminals and ground communications hardware. Harris Information Systems Division will develop software for both the ground systems and satellites.
The three divisions are part of the Harris Electronic Systems Sector, which conducts advanced research studies, develops prototypes, and produces a broad range of state-of-the-art systems for government agencies and commercial organizations in the U.S. and overseas.
Harris Corporation, with worldwide sales of more than $3 billion, is focused on four major businesses; electronic systems, communications, semiconductors, and Lanier Worldwide office equipment.
