HARRIS TO PROVIDE SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM FOR ELLIPSO SATELLITE SYSTEM

MELBOURNE, Fla., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS)has been selected by Mobile Communications Holding, Inc. (MCHI) to provide the communications subsystem for the Ellipso satellite system.
Ellipso is an innovative low- and medium-earth orbit communications satellite system, scheduled to be deployed in 1996, with commercial service scheduled to begin in 1997. It will provide worldwide mobile telephone and data-link communications between mobile and isolated users via L-, S- and C-band radio frequencies.
Ellipso interconnects with local telephone systems as a global extension of cellular systems, allowing worldwide mobile users to communicate with other mobile users, isolated regions, or with areas where traditional service is difficult to provide due to geographical and/or economic obstacles.
MCHI, based in Washington, D.C., conceives and develops mobile communications systems and has assembled a team of international aerospace and telecommunications companies to produce Ellipso. The spacecraft is being built by satellite prime contractor, Fairchild Space and Defense Corporation, of Germantown, Md. The MCHI team also includes partners in Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico that will promote and market the Ellipso voice and data services.
"We are pleased and excited to be a part of the Ellipso team," said Charles J. Herbert, vice president and general manager of Harris Government Aerospace Systems Division. "We evaluated the planned mobile satellite systems and found the Ellipso system to have several advantages."
He explained that the selected elliptical-inclined and equatorial orbits allow global coverage with as few as 14 spacecraft, a fraction of the number required by other proposed systems, resulting in significantly lower system and user costs. Herbert added, "Because the system can become operational during gradual deployment, early revenues are assured. Other systems require a complete constellation of satellites before operation can be initiated."
Dr. David Castiel, president and CEO of MCHI, said, "Harris' established credentials in satellite communications and aerospace technology provide the highest level of technical credibility and integrity to our team effort."
Harris Government Aerospace Systems Division is part of Harris Electronic Systems Sector, which conducts advanced research studies, develops prototypes, and produces a broad range of state-of-the-art systems for government agencies and commercial organizations.
Harris Corporation, with worldwide sales of more than $3 billion, is focused on four major businesses: electronic systems, communications, semiconductors, and Lanier Worldwide office equipment.
