HARRIS SELECTED FOR $16 MILLION LANDSAT COMMUNICATIONS PROJECT

MELBOURNE, Fla., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) has been awarded a $16 million contract from Martin Marietta Corporation to develop and produce a communications subsystem that will allow the Landsat 7 Earth sensing satellite to transmit key scientific data in real-time.
The contract was awarded to Harris Government Aerospace Systems Division, Palm Bay, Fla., by Martin Marietta Astro Space, Valley Forge, Pa.
The subsystem will operate at 300 megabytes per second and transmit data to a Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) satellite, which will then relay the imagery data to a ground station in White Sands, N.M. The imagery information then will be distributed to commercial, civil and military users throughout the United States.
Studying Earth's resources from space has been a key role of Landsats for more than 20 years. Each succeeding satellite has had increased sensing capabilities that were used by various groups including environmentalists, geologists, oceanographers, city planners and the military.
Current Landsats store data onboard and transmit it to the ground only when the satellite is in view of a ground station. The Landsat 7/TDRSS connection will allow the system to transfer the imagery data in real time from any point in the orbit, eliminating potential delays resulting from Landsat's position.
Harris also developed, built and delivered the umbrella-like deployable antennas on TDRSS that make the Landsat linkage possible. "The Landsat award positions Harris as a clear leader in providing communication systems that enable low earth orbit satellites to rapidly transmit data through geosynchronous satellites," said Charles Herbert, vice president-general manager of Harris Government Aerospace Systems Division (GASD).
Work on the contract will be completed by November 1995 and will be performed at GASD's facility in Palm Bay, Fla. The division is part of the Electronic Systems Sector, which conducts advanced research studies, develops prototypes, and produces a broad range of state-of-the-art systems for government agencies and commercial organizations worldwide.
Harris Corporation, with worldwide sales of more than $3 billion, is focused on four major businesses: electronic systems, communications, semiconductors, and Lanier Worldwide office equipment.
