HARRIS DELIVERS FIRST VOICE SWITCHING CONTROL SYSTEM TO FAA TECHNICAL CENTER

MELBOURNE, Fla., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) has delivered the first Voice Switching and Control System (VSCS) to the Federal Aviation Administration's Technical Center in Atlantic City, N.J. The system will be permanently located at the center and is the baseline for all future software and hardware upgrades to the program. VSCS is an integral part of the FAA's National Airspace System plan to modernize the nation's air traffic control system.
Harris' Air Traffic Control Systems Division (ATCSD) was awarded the $1.7 billion contract in December 1991, and the delivery represents a major milestone in the contract.
Upon FAA acceptance of the Harris prototype upgrade system, scheduled for completion in early March, limited production of five VSCS systems will begin. VSCS is scheduled for delivery to 22 Air Route Traffic Control Centers (ARTCCs) and three other FAA facilities over the next four years.
"This is a high-quality production prototype system and signifies our readiness to begin production and installation," said Dave E. Halley, vice president - general manager, Harris ATCSD. "The VSCS team is ready to support the FAA in a smooth deployment of one system per month to key FAA facilities."
Prior to arrival at the Center, Harris and the FAA conducted extensive Factory Acceptance Tests on the system, which consisted of a comprehensive test of system requirements specified by the FAA. The Factory Acceptance test cycle consisted of 44 days of testing, 37 of which were continuous 24-hour testing, 126 personnel shifts, 1,008 hours of testing, and more than 90 million calls placed. Halley noted, "The intensive tests required by the FAA underscore the critical importance of VSCS to the safety of today's air travelers."
VSCS will provide a communications system to facilitate the control of commercial, military and private air traffic in the United States today and into the next century. VSCS facilitates air-to-ground and ground-to-ground communications between air traffic controllers at ARTCCs and enroute aircraft and other FAA facilities. The Harris- produced system is a computer-controlled switching system that provides air traffic controllers with fast, flexible, easy-to-operate communications.
Air Traffic Control Systems Division is part of Harris Electronic Systems Sector, which conducts advanced research studies, develops prototypes, and produces a broad range of state-of-the-art systems for government agencies and commercial organizations worldwide.
Harris Corporation, with worldwide sales of more than $3 billion, is focused on four major businesses: electronic systems, communications, semiconductors, and Lanier Worldwide office equipment.
