HARRIS AWARDED $9.2 MILLION CONTRACT TO SUPPLY TURNKEY MICROWAVE TELECOMMUNICATION SYSTEM IN OMAN

MELBOURNE, Fla., Nov. 19 ~PRNewswire~ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) has been awarded a $9.2 million contract to replace Petroleum Development Oman's (PDO) original microwave telecommunications equipment with an advanced, digital microwave network.
Harris Farinon Canada, headquartered in Dorval, Quebec, was awarded the turnkey contract to design, engineer and construct an all-digital microwave telecommunications network for PDO. PDO is the main Oman company responsible for the exploration, production and development of the country's oil resources.
The new network will carry information vital to the operation of PDO's 900 kilometer oil pipeline system. The network will carry voice, data, and telemetry signals between PDO's oil fields, communication centers, and its main office in Mina Al Fahal, near Muscat on the Gulf of Oman. PDO's communications network also supports mobile communication services.
Harris will begin building the new network early in 1993 and is expected to complete installation in August 1993. The analog and digital systems will run concurrently until time to cut over to the new system. The cut-over will occur with minimal service interruption.
"Communications are a crucial part of the process that keeps a huge oil pipeline system operating smoothly," said Jim Bletas, vice-president of international sales for Harris Farinon Canada. "The new system is a state-of-the-art digital network that can withstand the severe desert type weather conditions of Oman."
Harris Farinon Division is part of Harris' Communications Sector. The division designs, manufactures, installs and services a broad range of analog and digital microwave radios, lightwave systems and multiplex equipment for world markets. Its products are used in more than 100 countries to provide communication networks for telephone and cellular companies; common carriers; utilities and railroads; financial, industrial and construction firms; military and government agencies; and broadcast stations.
Harris Corporation, with worldwide sales of more than $3 billion, is focused on four major businesses: electronic systems, communications, semiconductors and Lanier Worldwide office equipment.
