HARRIS AWARDED $4 MILLION CONTRACT TO SUPPLY
POWER SEMICONDUCTORS FOR SPACE STATION FREEDOM
MELBOURNE, Fla., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) has been awarded a $4 million contract to supply power semiconductors for a solar power system for NASA's Space Station Freedom.
The contract was awarded to Harris' Semiconductor Sector by the Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International Corporation, which is part of a team known as "Work Package Four." The team is designing and constructing a "sunlight-to-user" solar power system for the space station. The system will provide power generation, management and distribution throughout the space station.
Harris Semiconductor will supply a type of power semiconductor known as MOSFETs -- metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors -- to control and regulate power up to 57kw received from solar and battery sources. The Harris devices are designed to be highly resistant to the harmful effects of radiation that commonly plague systems operating in outer space for long periods of time.
The "Work Package Four" team is working under the direction of the NASA Lewis Research Center, Cleveland. Space Station Freedom is an international program, with the Canadian Space Agency, the European Space Agency, and the National Space Development Agency of Japan participating.
In addition to providing power semiconductors, Harris is developing other systems for Space Station Freedom, including an advanced audio/video communications system, and a next generation solar dynamic concentrator power system to help provide energy for long-term stays in space.
Harris Semiconductor Sector is the seventh largest merchant semiconductor manufacturer in the United States and the number-one supplier to the aerospace and military markets. Harris Corporation, with worldwide sales of more than $3 billion, is focused on four major businesses: electronic systems, semiconductors, communications, and Lanier Worldwide office equipment.
