 TESTED AND GUARANTEED FOR RADIATION HARDNESS
 MELBOURNE, Fla., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Harris Semiconductor and Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) have signed a licensing agreement to produce the industry's first fully tested and guaranteed radiation hardened Class-S field programmable gate array (FPGA).
 Under the agreement, Harris receives rights to Xilinx's architectures. Harris will produce 100-percent pin compatible, insulated substrate equivalents to the Xilinx MIL-STD-883 FPGAs. The Xilinx XACT development system will also be 100 percent compatible with the Harris FPGAs, including speed tables for Harris' radiation hardened versions. This means customers can begin designs today using Xilinx commercial or military parts and then use a completely rad hard Class-S version from Harris for their flight hardware.
 The first radiation hardened FPGA in a planned series will be the HS3020MSH, scheduled for release by the second quarter of calendar 1993. It is a 100 percent compatible version of the Xilinx XC3020B, an 1800-usable-gate military FPGA packaged in a 100-pin quad flatpack. In the future, Harris also plans to fabricate radiation hardened versions of other Xilinx FPGAs.
 Harris will fabricate the Xilinx FPGAs on its 1.25-micron TSOS4 CMOS/SOS process, developed specifically for radiation environments. Silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) technology incorporates a thin layer of semiconducting silicon grown on an insulating sapphire substrate to achieve guaranteed radiation hardness. The latch-up free TSOS4 process features extremely high single event upset immunity (less than 1E-12 errors/bit/day, Adams 10-percent worst case environment.) Total dose hardness of TSOS4 exceeds 1E6 RAD/Si.
 FPGAs, the fastest growing segment of the semiconductor market, dramatically reduce NRE charges, board space, time-to-market and design risks. Beyond higher integration, standard off-the-shelf FPGAs enhance system functionality through on-chip reprogrammability on the fly, even after a satellite, for example, is in orbit.
 "Reconfigurable FPGAs are ideal for military and aerospace applications," said Wes Patterson, Xilinx's chief operating officer. "The flexibility of the Xilinx FPGA architecture, coupled with the rad hard process from Harris, will open up an entirely new avenue for military/aerospace logic designers."
 Majority of Business Expected to be Commercial
 Harris, the longtime top-ranked military/aeorspace supplier, estimates that FPGAs could replace approximately 20 percent of the radiation hardened logic circuits currently implemented with gate arrays and standard logic ICs. More than 70 percent of Harris' business for FPGAs is expected to originate from non-military space applications, such as commercial satellite communications and scientific projects in the United States, Europe and Japan. Examples of scientific projects include deep space probes, interplanetary research and satellites for earth observations and space environment research.
