HARRIS ALLIED TO DEVELOP AND MANUFACTURE MODULATION AND TRANSMISSION EQUIPMENT FOR ZENITH-AT&T HDTV SYSTEM

 QUINCY, Ill., Jan. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Harris Allied Broadcast Division today announced plans to develop and manufacture broadcast equipment for the Zenith-AT&T digital high-definition television (HDTV) system.
 Harris will support the rapid deployment of digital HDTV 4-VSB (four level vestigial sideband) modulation and transmitting equipment to broadcasters should the Federal Communications Commission adopt the Zenith-AT&T "Digital Spectrum Compatible" (DSC-HDTV) system as the new broadcast standard.
 "Harris has been extensively involved in HDTV, from providing the RF test bed for the Advanced Television Test Center to participating in systems testing," said Frank A. Svet, vice president and TV RF product line manager for Harris Allied.
 "We intend to use our expertise in television transmission and video systems as well as digital technology to be a leading HDTV supplier."
 Harris has agreed to license DSC-HDTV technology if the FCC adopts the Zenith/AT&T system. This technology would be used in exciters for Harris' HDTV-ready UHF television transmitter line, which includes 10-240 kW IOT transmitters, 3-30 kW solid state transmitters and 60-280 kW MSDC transmitters.
 HDTV transmission processing equipment combines and formats digitally-compressed video, compressed audio and ancillary data for error correction pre-coding and data equalization to remove transmission errors and ghosting.
 DSC-HDTV's unique pilot carrier and pre-coding, which assure carrier acquisition and rejection of interference from existing NTSC television signals, also are part of the transmission processing and modulation equipment.
 Transmitter prototypes are expected to be available soon after the FCC selects an HDTV standard. Commercial products will follow.
