HARRIER REACQUIRES MANUFACTURING RIGHTS TO BIOPTRON LAMP; PLANS TO START PRODUCTION IN U.S. UNDER CONTRACT

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Harrier, Inc. (NASDAQ: HARE) said today that it had come to an agreement with the principals of Bioptron A.G. permitting Harrier to manufacture the Bioptron(R) Lamp in the U.S. and that a new consumer model would be produced under contract by a California manufacturer at about 25 percent of the cost of the current B-1 model which it has been importing from Switzerland. The new units should be available under another trademark name early in 1994.
Harrier sold its former subsidiary to its current owners last July but retained exclusive rights to market the patented product in the Western Hemisphere. Sales have been underway in the U.S. since late 1992 through direct sales and medical device distributors and specialty marketing organizations.
The Bioptron Lamp is a proprietary medical device registered with the FDA for the treatment of pain from arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis and strained muscles, among other conditions. Its infrared spectral distribution is highly polarized and able to penetrate deeply into tissue for enhanced therapeutic benefit. The product has been sold in Europe and Asia through direct-to-consumer sales organizations both as a medical and cosmetic device.
Commenting on the new lamp, Kevin DeVito, president of Harrier, said: "Its low cost, achieved principally through improved manufacturing processes and lower materials cost, will allow us to price the product competitively in mass distribution channels previously closed to us because of the high cost of the imported product."
