HARRAH'S SELECTED TO NEGOTIATE FOR NORTH KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI'S FIRST RIVERBOAT CASINO

MEMPHIS, Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Harrah's Casino Hotels, the gaming subsidiary of The Promus Companies Incorporated (NYSE: PRI), has been selected to negotiate exclusively with the City of North Kansas City, Missouri, to develop and operate a casino entertainment complex on the Missouri River.
The proposed $50 million Harrah's North Kansas City Riverboat Casino project will include a 256 foot, 1,550 passenger riverboat featuring a classic side wheel design and a unique atrium, complete with a glass elevator soaring between three decks of the boat. High ceilings and fine finishes will capture the atmosphere of Missouri's riverboat history. The boat's approximately 62,000 square feet of public area will include a 25,000 square foot casino with approximately 900 slot machines and 55 table games.
"We are delighted to receive such an overwhelming response from Mayor Elizabeth Short and the city council of North Kansas City," said Colin Reed, Senior Vice President of Development for Promus. "North Kansas City offers an outstanding site which will be relatively easy to develop. It has excellent access and is well situated for expansion into a substantial entertainment complex. We expect to create a secure, convenient and entertaining environment for our customers."
Opening of the casino is targeted for the second quarter 1994. In addition to the casino, Harrah's has proposed a 60,000 square foot landside facility featuring entertainment, a restaurant, retail space and parking. A potential phase two development would include a hotel, additional entertainment offerings, a second boat and additional parking.
Based on preliminary estimates the riverboat casino project is expected to create more than 300 local construction jobs and approximately 1,100 full-time jobs once the riverboat casino entertainment complex is operational.
"When completed, we expect Harrah's to attract some 1.5 million visitors to the North Kansas City riverfront each year," Reed added.
Proceeding with the project is subject to negotiation and signing of an exclusive contract with the City, approval of voters in North Kansas City during a special referendum election to be held February 2, receipt of a Missouri riverboat gambling license and other regulatory approvals.
North Kansas City is the fourth casino riverboat complex announced by Harrah's. Two casino riverboats are currently under construction for a complex in downtown Joliet, Illinois, 40 miles from Chicago; a complex in Vicksburg, Mississippi, is scheduled to begin construction in March 1993; and the company is in exclusive negotiations with the City of Shreveport, Louisiana, for a complex there.
Harrah's is the only national casino brand and the only casino company operating in all five major casino gaming markets: Atlantic City, New Jersey, and in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Laughlin and Reno, Nevada. Harrah's parent company, The Promus Companies Incorporated, also owns and operates three leading hotel brands: Embassy Suites, Hampton Inns and Homewood Suites hotels.
