HARRAH'S AND ET RIVER CORP. AWARDED CERTIFICATE OF PRELIMINARY APPROVAL FOR A GAMING DEVELOPMENT IN SHREVEPORT, LA -CONSTRUCTION TO BEGIN 2ND QUARTER 1993-

MEMPHIS, Tenn., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Harrah's, the casino entertainment subsidiary of The Promus Companies Incorporated (NYSE: PRI) and its partner ET River Corp., announced today that their partnership, Red River Entertainment of Shreveport, was awarded a certificate of preliminary approval by the Louisiana Riverboat Gaming Commission to develop and operate the city's first riverboat casino entertainment complex in downtown Shreveport on the Red River.
The certificate of preliminary approval allows Red River Entertainment of Shreveport to begin construction of the $41.3 million project which is expected to open in the first quarter 1994 subject to final regulatory approvals. Louisiana may grant up to 15 licenses for riverboat casino complexes in the state.
The project will feature a 210-foot-long riverboat with a turn-of- the-century paddlewheel design historically found on the Mississippi River. The 45,000 square-foot riverboat will contain approximately 20,000 square-feet of casino entertainment space. The company anticipates the casino will feature 700 slot machines and 40 table games.
Additional dockside facilities complementing the 19th century riverboat will include a riverwalk, a parking garage and a restaurant and lounge.
Based on preliminary estimates, the riverboat casino entertainment project is expected to create approximately 200 local construction jobs and more than 700 full-time jobs once the riverboat entertainment complex is operational.
Harrah's is also currently developing casino entertainment facilities in Joliet, IL; Vicksburg, MS; and North Kansas City, MO. Harrah's has also filed a Notice of Intent to apply for a Mississippi gaming license to operate riverboat casino entertainment complexes in Tunica, MS and Biloxi, MS. In Kenner, LA, Harrah's has filed an application for a certificate of preliminary approval to develop and operate a casino entertainment complex.
Harrah's is the only casino entertainment company operating in all five major casino gaming markets: Atlantic City, New Jersey, and in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Laughlin and Reno, Nevada. Harrah's parent company, The Promus Companies Incorporated also owns and operates three leading hotel brands: Embassy Suites, Hampton Inn and Homewood Suites hotels.
