HARPERCOLLINS ACQUIRES WORLD RIGHTS TO NEW BOOK BY
BESTSELLING AUTHOR AND ENTREPRENEUR HARVEY MACKAY
NEW YORK, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The man Fortune magazine acclaimed as "Mr. Make Things Happen" -- Minneapolis-based entrepreneur and bestselling author Harvey Mackay -- is changing publishers and moving to HarperCollins, William M. Shinker, HarperCollins group vice president and publisher of the Adult Trade Group announced today. HarperCollins will publish Mackay's new book, tentatively titled "Shark Proof: Get The Job You Want, Keep The Job You Love -- In Today's Frenzied Job Market," under the HarperBusiness imprint in January 1993, with a 250,000-copy first printing.
"This is a great acquisition for HarperCollins and for HarperBusiness," commented Shinker. "Harvey Mackay is one of the most visible and admired figures in American business today. He is a tremendously successful businessman, civic leader, and sought-after motivational speaker, and in "Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive" and "Beware The Naked Man Who Offers You His Shirt" he has written two of the most pithy, readable, and -- above all-- valuable books of business advice to date. There is no shortage of books of advice from successful executives. And yet, in a very crowded field, Harvey Mackay has managed to stand head and shoulders above the crowd. There is, quite simply, no one like Harvey Mackay."
"In his first two bestsellers, Harvey Mackay shared, in his inimitable way, tips for finding success in one's job," said Ed Breslin, HarperCollins senior vice president, associate publisher and executive editor of the Adult Trade Group, who acquired "Shark Proof" and will be Mackay's editor. "In the 90s the business climate has changed dramatically, and Harvey Mackay is now turning his attention to advising his audience on how to find and keep jobs -- something he has done for some thirty years, acting as mentor to some and advisor to many. Finding and keeping jobs are the major priorities of a decade where skilled professionals and even partners in major law firms are being shown the door in record numbers. 'Shark Proof' will be as useful and inspiring to his readers as it is necessary."
Mackay is the founder and CEO of the Mackay Envelope Corporation, which he built from scratch into a highly successful $35 million corporation. A civic leader in his hometown of Minneapolis, he spearheaded the drive to build the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, served as a catalyst in organizing the campaign to keep the Minnesota Twins from leaving the state, and was one of the leaders of a group that brought the 1992 NFL Super Bowl to the Twin Cities.
Mackay's two previous books, "Swim With The Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive" and "Beware The Naked Man Who Offers You His Shirt," were both huge international bestsellers. "Swim With The Sharks" was the number one bestselling business book of 1988. It remained on the New York Times bestseller list for six months, was translated into 25 languages and distributed in 80 countries, and was a selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club, the Fortune, Macmillan, and Preferred Choice Book Clubs. "Beware The Naked Man Who Offers You His Shirt" was also a number one New York Time bestseller, and was also a Main Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club, the Fortune, Macmillan, and Quality Paperback Book Clubs. To date Mackay's books have sold over 7 million copies worldwide.
HarperCollins controls world rights to "Shark Proof." All domestic and foreign rights will be sold by HarperCollins Vice President and Rights Director Brenda Segel.
