HARPER GROUP TO TAKE NORTH AMERICAN IMPROVEMENTS WORLDWIDE

NAPLES, Fla., Feb. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- "We're applying the lessons we learned in North America to our operations around the world," said Peter Gibert, president and chief executive officer of The Harper Group Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: HARG). Addressing analysts at the 1993 Lehman Brothers Transportation Seminar today, Gibert noted the improvements his company made during 1992. "We unified our U.S. offices to provide all of our services -- air and freight forwarding, customs brokerage, transportation insurance and warehousing and distribution -- at each location."
"We've also leveraged the buying power of our 385 branches to negotiate favorable carrier rates for our customers," he added. Internally, the company has strengthened its management team with the addition of industry veterans. Most recently, Jack Edwards, formerly president and chief executive officer of Itel Corp.'s Transportation Services Group, joined Harper as president and chief operating officer of North American operating companies. Michael Cromar, formerly senior vice president of Finance and Information for Gearbulk, a Norwegian shipping and distribution company, was named vice president and chief financial officer of the Harper Group. The company also stepped up its sales and marketing efforts by establishing a global marketing department and hiring more salespeople across the United States.
"These changes to our North American operating companies have helped us increase our ratio of income before taxes to net revenue from 16 percent in 1991 to 20 percent in 1992," said Gibert. "Now it's time to make these changes around the world."
Gibert says the company will expand its North American success formula to Europe first. The company's Baxter Livingston and Circle Freight International branches recently consolidated into Harper Freight International in the United Kingdom.
"We're putting tighter controls on operating expenses and investing more in systems and sales around the world," he said. The company is known for its advanced logistics information system called HarperLink, which provides real-time, worldwide communications between offices, customers and customs agencies. Next month the company will introduce a PC-based system that will make it easier for customers to track shipments through the company's mainframe computer.
"I hope that these investments in systems, along with our focus on global sales and marketing, will increase our net revenue between 7 and 10 percent," concluded Gibert.
The Harper Group boasts over 30 years of uninterrupted earnings and has paid semi-annual dividends since going public in 1977. The Harper group provides transportation and information management to its clients in 44 countries around the world.
