HARPER GROUP EARNS ISO 9000 CERTIFICATION IN U.K. SERVICE CENTERS

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Harper Group Inc. (NASDAQ: HARG) today announced that its 22 Harper Freight International offices in the United Kingdom have earned full certification under the ISO 9002 (BS5750) technical quality standards set up by the Geneva-based International Organization of Standardization.
"We have worked diligently at our service centers around the world to earn ISO 9000 certification," says Peter Gibert, chairman and chief executive officer of the Harper Group. "We have challenged ourselves to meet the same rigorous quality standards that our customers are being required to adhere to around the world. The ISO 9000 certification process essentially formalized and documented the same quality practices that have been employed by our international transportation and logistics business for many years. ISO 9000 is the de facto quality standard in Europe."
In fact, ISO 9000 is accepted and, in some cases, required by companies in 55 countries. ISO 9000 places strict requirements on a company's quality system and suppliers must also meet these standards. "The process focuses attention on what business is all about -- serving the customer," adds Gibert.
The Harper Group is in application for ISO 9000 in several countries, including the United States, Philippines, Netherlands, Germany and New Zealand. The company has a history of quality initiatives, including extensive employee cross-training, an annual client satisfaction survey, carrier/vendor performance measurements and several quality awards, including 3M and Texas Instruments.
The Harper Group's network of owned offices and agents spans 85 countries around the world. Its integrated logistics solutions vary from airfreight logistics with time-definite features, to vendor management and tracking for importers. Increasingly, the Harper Group provides infrastructure solutions and integrated logistics to its clients, including information systems, transportation, warehousing and inventory management. Founded in 1898, the company provides inventory and distribution management, materials requirement planning, protective cargo packing, bonded warehousing, foreign trade zone operations, marine insurance, air and ocean freight forwarding, sea/air transportation and customs brokerage, supported by a range of information applications such as electronic data interchange (EDI).
