HARPER GROUP AWARDED GIANT CODELCO CONTRACT

SANTIAGO, Chile, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Codelco, the state copper corporation of Chile, has signed a service contract with the Harper Group Inc. (NASDAQ: HARG). Codelco, the largest corporation in Chile, produces over half that country's copper.
"This is the most comprehensive global integrated logistics project ever secured by our company," said Peter Gibert, chairman and chief executive officer of the Harper Group. Harper will provide air and ocean transportation services, purchase order tracking, warehousing, packaging, project coordination, inland routing, electronic data interchange (EDI), emergency procurement and purchasing management. The project will require global coordination from Harper facilities in North America, Europe and Santiago.
Recently, Gibert toured Codelco's Chuquicamata mine, the largest copper mine in the world. "Thousands of people live and work at this mine, which is operated around the clock, every day of the year. Harper will provide complete integrated logistics services, including emergency supply procurements of machinery, spare parts, books, emergency equipment and hospital drugs to support the workers' communities.
"We're providing an environment whereby each mine will place orders directly with their suppliers using our global computer network. We expect 1,500 Codelco employees to utilize our E-mail system. We'll also have complete EDI capability," said Gibert. "The purchasing managers at the mines and at Codelco's headquarters in Santiago can trace, expedite and determine the cost of every shipment. They can verify our transit commitment by commodity, supplier or carrier." Harper will handle more than 20,000 shipments over the duration of the contract.
The agreement was three years in the making, with Harper operations and systems experts working closely with Codelco. "This was a turn-key project," explained Gibert. "Our personnel stayed on-site to experience first-hand the working environment and understand Codelco's needs."
A leader in the industry since 1898, the Harper Group provides inventory and distribution management, materials requirement planning, protective cargo packing, bonded warehousing, foreign trade zone operations, marine insurance, air and ocean freight forwarding and customs brokerage, supported by a range of information applications such as electronic data interchange. Major subsidiaries include Circle Airfreight Corp., Circle Freight International, Harper Robinson & Co., Sekin Transport International, Max Gruenhut International and Harper Freight International branches in 44 countries.
