HARMON INDUSTRIES AWARDED CONTRACT FOR ST. LOUIS METRO LINK
                HARMON ENTERS RAIL TRANSIT MARKET
BLUE SPRINGS, Mo., Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Harmon Industries Inc. (NASDAQ: HRMN), of Blue Springs, announced today that the company was awarded a $4.7 million sub-contract for a signalling and train control system on the St. Louis Metro Link light rail transit project. Morrison Knudsen/Fritz, of Boise, Idaho, is the prime contractor on the award. This award comes on the heels of another $4 million contract from the Norfolk Southern Corp. for a communications and control center.
Metro Link will provide service to St. Louis area passengers along an 18-mile route from Lambert International Airport to East St. Louis, Ill. There will be 20 station stops, including Busch Stadium and the University of Missouri -- St. Louis, where transit cars will run as frequently as every 10 minutes. The majority of the line will run above ground, in addition to utilizing an existing railroad tunnel under the downtown area. Metro Link is scheduled for completion in July 1993.
Harmon will apply several of its car-borne and wayside products on the Metro Link system. These include a version of the HLC Interlocking Controller which will select and transmit speed commands for the trains, as well as control wayside signals, switches, and grade crossing warning devices. Harmon's Ultra Cab system will be used on each of the 31 transit vehicles to receive speed commands from the wayside equipment and automatically stop the train if the operator does not respond promptly to all signals and speed commands.
"The Metro Link contract is a natural extension of our mainline railroad products and services. Harmon continues to experience strong growth in many of its product lines because we apply our products to both the railroad and transit markets," said Bjorn E. Olsson, president and chief operating officer. "Rail transit continues to offer additional opportunities for the company's future growth."
