HARMAN RUNNING BRITAIN.

HARRIET Harman yesterday became the first woman to run Britain since Margaret Thatcher left in 1990.

The Labour deputy leader is standing in for Gordon Brown - on holiday in Suffolk.

She said yesterday: "I'm minding the shop this week."

A No10 spokesman at first said Ms Harman was merely one of a number of "ministers to deal with day-to-day business of government" and said the PM remained in charge despite his break.

But the spokesman made clear later on: "She is the minister co-ordinating government business this week."

Ms Harman led meetings in No10 yesterday morning.

Different ministers could take the helm over the next two weeks while Mr Brown is away.
