HARLEY-DAVIDSON INFORMS DEALERS OF MOTORCYCLE PRODUCTION BACKLOG
MILWAUKEE, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Harley-Davidson Inc. (NYSE: HDI) announced that it is advising its motorcycle dealers today of an anticipated one-week production backlog that it expects will not be made up by the end of its second quarter, June 30. The backlog of approximately 1,500 1992 model-year motorcycles will be made up in July. This could result in a one-week delay in the production of 1993 model- year motorcycles, but should not have an impact on total 1992 calendar year production, the company said.
"We've already lost the equivalent of several days of production during the quarter and anticipate losing some additional days, primarily due to the ongoing transition from our old to new paint systems in our York, Pa., motorcycle assembly facility," said James L. Ziemer, chief financial officer, Harley-Davidson Inc.
Following the transition, which will be completed by mid-June, Ziemer said the new paint facility will initially operate in two shifts, to minimize risk of lost production due to employee training or equipment problems.
"Fortunately, demand for our motorcycles remains high, dealer inventories are lower than last year at this time and we're confident these delayed vehicles will move swiftly upon delivery to dealers," Ziemer said.
