HARDEE'S WINS NATIONAL AWARD FOR ITS PRO-ACTIVE PROGRAM
AIMED AT HIRING PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C., Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Hardee's Food Systems, Inc., has received the national Small Employer of the Year award from the President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. The award recognized Hardee's positive efforts recruiting, hiring, training and retaining people with disabilities in the Winston-Salem, N.C. area.
Robert F. Autry, Hardee's President and Chief Executive Officer, was on hand when the prestigious honor was accepted by Billy Griffin, human resource representative, recently in Washington, D.C.
"We aggressively hire people with disabilities because it makes good business sense," he said. "Our goal at Hardee's is to satisfy our customers better than the competition. People with disabilities are very motivated, reliable and committed to their work. They do a tremendous job pleasing customers, make positive contributions to Hardee's restaurants, and bottom line, they help us as they mainstream into society."
Two years ago, Hardee's introduced its CAPAbilities Program which actively sensitizes and trains its restaurant managers and franchisees how to recruit and retain people with disabilities for jobs in its restaurants. The program was developed by Jim Teismann, director of restaurant human resource systems at Hardee's. Also making major contributions were Joe Smith of Boddie-Noell Enterprises, Hardee's second largest licensee, based in Rocky Mount, N.C., and Billy Griffin, human resource representative, in Hardee's Raleigh, N.C., region office.
Two success stories resulting from Hardee's CAPAbilities program are Grace Howard who works at Hardee's in Walkerton, N.C., and Joe Eller, who works at Hardee's in Boone, N.C. Born with a rare spinal cord disease, Howard has been a key employee in her restaurant and last year, was named Disabled Employee of the Year by her local Mayor's Council for Persons with Disabilities. Eller, who has speech and mobility problems resulting from being hit by an automobile while he was walking home from a party while in high school, has been equally successful working for franchisee Jim Hastings, and next month will receive the Governor's Award as the JTPA Adult Participant of the Year. He beat out 15,000 people to win the honor.
"There are many other equally successful stories resulting from the CAPAbilities Program here at Hardee's," said Teismann. "We continue to take a pro-active posture in hiring persons with disabilities."
As part of its pro-active position, Hardee's and Tri-Counties Industries, a work-oriented rehabilitation facility that provides a myriad of rehabilitation and employment services in a five-county area surrounding Rocky Mount, N.C., are partners in a "Projects With Industry" grant to place two thousand persons with mental and physical disabilities within Hardee's restaurants, plants and office facilities over the next five years.
"Although not related to any of these programs, we also continue to be a major supporter of Special Olympics," said Teismann. "For nearly a decade we and Boddie-Noell Enterprises, as well as many other franchisees within our system, have sponsored local and state events. Hardee's was also one of the major sponsors of both the '87 and '91 International Summer Special Olympics Games."
Headquartered in Rocky Mount, N.C., Hardee's Food Systems is the third largest fast-food hamburger restaurant company in the world operating over 4,000 restaurants in 40 states and 10 foreign countries.
