 ROCKY MOUNT, N.C., July 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Hardee's Food Systems, Inc. (HFS) today released its financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 1993. For the fourth consecutive quarter, HFS increased its earnings. Second quarter operating earnings were $32.6 million versus $24.3 million for this same period last year, up 34 percent. Operating earnings for the current six months ended June 30 were $33.9 million, up 145 percent over the prior year.
 Systemwide sales, which reflect sales of all company and franchise restaurants, were $1.3 billion, an increase of 7 percent over the second quarter total of $1.2 billion in 1992. Systemwide sales year-to-date were $2.4 billion, reflecting a 7 percent increase over the comparable 1992 period.
 Company revenues during the quarter also were up 7 percent compared to a
year ago. HFS' revenues for the second quarter were $537.6 million, compared to $502.4 million last year at this time. Six month revenues were $987.5 million, an increase of 6 percent over this same time last year.
 While competition among the major fast-food chains is stiff, Hardee's is responding to the challenge with an emphasis on new menu items, food quality and service.

"Hardee's will continue to focus on stimulating sales in that way, while controlling our costs.  Also among the more successful Hardee's product initiatives are the Ultimate Omelet Biscuit(TM) and the New York Patty Melt(TM). Inspired by the success of its Hardee's Frisco Burger(TM), the company recently expanded the line to include the Frisco(TM) Grilled Chicken Sandwich and the Frisco(TM) Breakfast Sandwich.
 Roy Rogers(R) Restaurants, owned by Hardee's, continues to build on the quality of the Roy's Roasters(TM) chicken product, and to reinforce its position as the high quality fast-food player in the northeast.
 Hardee's Food Systems, Inc., headquartered in Rocky Mount, operates a system of 4,000 company and franchise restaurants in 40 states and 11 foreign countries. Approximately 650 of the restaurants operate under the Roy Rogers trademark. Hardee's has expanded its hamburger and sandwich menu with fresh fried chicken, becoming the second largest chicken chain in the world.
