HARDEE'S & FFM GIVE SUPPORT TO FFA CAMPAIGN

RALEIGH, N.C., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The North Carolina FFA Foundation, Inc., announced today that it has received a $10,000 pledge from Hardee's Food Systems, Inc., and a $5,000 pledge from Fast Food Merchandisers, Inc. (FFM), Hardee's manufacturing and distribution division, both headquartered in Rocky Mount. In announcing the pledge, Hardee's Director of Public Affairs W. Maurice Bridges said: "It makes good sense to support these young people. We look at it as an investment in our future."
State FFA Vice President Carol Hassell of Elizabeth City, who accepted the gift on behalf of FFA, expressed her appreciation for Hardee's and FFM's support of agricultural education and FFA. She further indicated that the contributions will be used for much needed funding of FFA programs and activities, including the North Carolina FFA Center at White Lake.
Hardee's Food Systems, Inc., founded in 1960, is the fourth largest restaurant company in the world, operating more than 4,000 restaurants in 40 states and 11 foreign countries. Systemwide sales now exceed $4.8 billion. Approximately 650 restaurants operate under the Roy Rogers trademark. Hardee's has expanded its hamburger and sandwich menu with fresh fried chicken, becoming the second largest chicken restaurant in the world. Fast Food Merchandisers was founded in 1970 as the Hardee's food processing and distribution company. Today, FFM services nearly all of Hardee's restaurants from its three plants and ten distribution facilities located throughout the United States.
The North Carolina FFA Foundation, Inc., is a statewide, non-profit organization established in 1976 to provide support for the educational programs and activities of the FFA (formally, Future Farmers of America). The Hardee's and FFM gifts were given as a part of a multi- year campaign known as "FFA -- Now More Than Ever." The two-fold purpose of the campaign is to (1) create public awareness of and (2) generate $3 million in financial support for agricultural education and FFA in North Carolina.
$1.5 million is intended to provide continued funding for the development of leadership and personal development activities, competitive events, awards and recognition programs, curriculum development, and increased public awareness about agriculture, agricultural education and FFA. The additional $1.5 million is needed for major improvements to the North Carolina FFA Center (R.J. Peeler Camp). The camp, which was built in the 1920's, is used by FFA, FFA alumni, church, civic, community and education groups during the warm- weather months. Approximately 250 campers and guests are accommodated each week during the FFA summer camping season. In addition to organized recreation, the camp is an ideal setting for leadership and personal development activitiesa?s the State FFA Leadership Conference held each year in July.
Since 1984, FFA members, agriculture teachers, alumni mm?bers and others have contributed nearly $350,000 for renovations to the camp. Additional improvn?ts are needed to prepare the facilities for year- round use.
So far in the campaign, some $350,000 in donations and pledges have been received. Funding is being sought from business and industry, private foundations, individual and other sources.
