HANNAFORD ELECTS LAUREL CUTLER TO ITS BOARD

 SCARBOROUGH, Maine, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Hannaford Bros. Co. (NYSE: HRD) announced the election today of Laurel Cutler to its Board of Directors.
 Laurel Cutler is vice chairman of FCB/Leber Katz Partners and worldwide director of marketing planning and member of the Board of Directors of Foote, Cone & Belding Communications. She joined LKP in 1972 to establish the marketing planning function, which is dedicated to "Preempting the Future," and is charged with developing systematic assumptions about the consumer marketplace five years out.
 In November of 1988, she was appointed a corporate officer of Chrysler Corporation, an FCB/LKP client since 1985. Cutler was chosen by Chrysler because of her "outstanding record in forecasting future trends in the marketplace," said Chrysler Chairman Lee Iacocca. She served in that capacity until Dec. 31, 1990, while at the same time maintaining her position at Leber Katz Partners.
 Before joining LKP, Cutler was, for eight years, senior vice president, creative director, and a director of the company at McCann- Erickson. The group she managed had responsibility for the National Biscuit Company, General Foods, The Association of American Railroads, John Hancock Corporation, Tampax, Simmons, the Ortho Division of Johnson & Johnson, the Sauter and Pantene Divisions of Hoffman-LaRoche, and Burger Chef. Her entire advertising career has included senior management responsibility in both the account service and creative disciplines for a broad variety of packaged and non-packaged goods and services.
 In November, 1990, she was named one of the 50 most powerful women in American by the Ladies' Home Journal. She is a graduate of Wellesley College from which she received her degree in Philosophy with honors. Her only job outside advertising was as a reporter for The Washington Post. Cutler resides in New York City.
 Hannaford, headquartered in Scarborough, Maine, is northern New England's largest food retailer with sales in 1992 of $2.1 billion. Hannaford currently operates 94 food and combination food/drug stores in the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York.
