 HANDY & HARMAN ANNOUNCES PROMOTION OF JAMES S. MCELYA
 NEW YORK, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Handy & Harman (NYSE: HNH) today


announced that James S. McElya, president of the Handy & Harman Automotive Group Inc., has been promoted to the position of corporate group vice president for precious metals, and Calvin W. Gray, a long- time automotive parts executive, will join the company as president of Handy & Harman Automotive Group Inc., replacing McElya.
 McElya, 44, who came to Handy & Harman almost two decades ago, has been president of the Automotive Group since 1987. He has held several other senior positions at Handy & Harman including president of Brunner Engineering & Manufacturing, general manager of the Camdel Metals Division of the Specialty Tubing Group, and plant superintendent of Handy & Harman Tube Company. As group vice president, McElya assumes responsibility for the company's precious metals products and refining businesses, which also include the Canadian operations and the Lucas- Milhaupt subsidiary. He will report to Frank Grzelecki, Handy & Harman vice chairman, in New York.
 Gray, 50, comes to Handy & Harman from A.O. Smith Corporation, where he was senior vice president-marketing, for the company's four-part Automotive Products Division. His direct responsibility included sales, marketing and product engineering. Prior to A.O. Smith, he was vice president and general manager of the Steering Wheel Division of Sheller Globe Corporation.
 Gray, who will be based in Auburn Hills, Mich., reports to R.M. Thompson, corporate group vice president at Handy & Harman.
 Handy & Harman, a leading fabricator, processor and refiner of precious metals, also produces a variety of specialty metal products for industrial uses through over 30 subsidiaries here and abroad. Founded in 1867, Handy & Harman is headquartered in New York.
