HAMBURGER LOVERS CELEBRATE NATIONAL HOLIDAY

COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- America's favorite sandwich, the hamburger, is getting some well-deserved attention during May as the country celebrates National Hamburger Month sponsored by White Castle System, Inc.
White Castle, the country's first hamburger fast-food chain, paid tribute to the hamburger when it sponsored the National Hamburger Week May 5-11 in 1992. This year, White Castle has expanded the week into a monthlong celebration to recognize the sandwich which has become a staple of American eating habits.
"Everyone in America loves hamburgers," said Kim Bartley, White Castle's director of marketing. "But not many people know how they came about. The origin of the hamburger is an important piece of Americana - and we intend to celebrate it in May during National Hamburger Month."
Several American cities claim to be the hamburger's birthplace. In 1885, Charlie Nagreen set up a fair food stand in Seymour, Wis., featuring a sandwich of flattened meatballs between two slices of bread. That same year, the Menches brothers from Stark County, Ohio, combined ground beef, brown sugar and coffee and served it on bread at a fair in Hamburg, N.Y. In 1904 the hamburger gained national attention at the St. Louis World's Fair as Fletcher Davis, of Athens, Texas, served his creation between two slices of bread garnished with hot mustard, Bermuda onions and cucumber pickles.
Last year, via a White Castle telephone survey, hamburger fans voted Seymour, Wis., as the "Home of the Hamburger." The town now plans to open the first Hamburger Hall of Fame in August.
The original fast-food hamburger was created in Wichita, Kan., in 1921 when Billy Ingram and Walt Anderson, White Castle's founders, grilled a 100 percent beef patty over onions and served it on a bun.
In this spirit of invention, White Castle calls upon all hamburger lovers to create their own tribute to National Hamburger Month and the hamburger by developing recipes using 10 White Castle hamburgers during the second annual Hamburger Recipe Contest. The winner receives a sack of 10 White Castle hamburgers each week for a year. Recipes should be mailed to Katey Kelly, Hamburger Recipe Contest, 555 West Goodale St., Columbus, Ohio 43215. The deadline is July 1, 1993.
