HAL RINEY & PARTNERS WINS SUNOCO ACCOUNT
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Sun Company, Inc. (NYSE: SUN),

and Hal Riney & Partners, Inc., announced today that Riney has been selected to handle the Sunoco national advertising account.
The firms said they have signed a letter of intent to enter into a contract under which Riney will perform all national advertising services and creative development for Sunoco gasoline and other branded products as well as for Sunoco's Ultra Service Centers and Food Markets. Average annual billings are in the $10 million range.
Robert H. Campbell, Sun's chairman and chief executive officer, said that Riney was selected following a thorough review process that began in March with Sun asking nine agencies to make presentations to Sunoco. By July the field was narrowed to three -- Riney, Weightman Group, and Wells Rich Greene BBDP, which has had the Sunoco account since 1972.
Campbell said each agency was given the same hypothetical creative and strategic assignment as part of the selection process. "We also considered the abilities of the individuals who would be working on our account, the 'bench strength' of the agency, the work they have done for other clients, and their strategic thinking ability," he said. "All three finalists made excellent presentations, but we felt that Riney's approach most clearly matched Sunoco's vision."
The Sunoco account will be serviced from Riney's New York City office. Riney Executive Vice President Joe O'Neill, who is also general manager and chief creative officer at the New York office, said the Sunoco assignment "is terribly exciting to the team we've put together here during the last year. It validates our philosophy that a strong senior staff in creative as well as in the other marketing disciplines can make a real contribution to our clients and their future communication strategies -- and also attract wonderful business like Sunoco's."
Sun Company, headquartered in Philadelphia, is an energy company with interests in U.S. and Canadian petroleum refining and marketing, U.S. coal and coke production, synthetic crude oil production in Canada, and crude oil and natural gas exploration and production outside the United States. Branded marketing is carried out under the Sunoco brand in the United States and Canada and also under the Atlantic brand in the United States. Sun Company trades on the New York Stock Exchange and other stock exchanges with the symbol "SUN."
