HACKERS HASSLE N.Y. TIMES.

Byline: Daily News Staff and Wire Reports

The Web page of The New York Times was hacked Sunday morning by a group supporting computer hacker Kevin Mitnick, who has been imprisoned in Los Angeles.

An editor discovered the hack at 7:50 a.m., and the page was taken down to be repaired, said Nancy Nielson, a Times spokeswoman. ``The material was so offensive,'' she said.

The Times contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, she said.

In a mishmash of creative spelling and vague threats against a black background, a group calling itself Hacking for Girlies ridiculed several members of the Times staff.

It took special interest in reporter John Markoff, who wrote ``TakeDown,'' a book detailing the search for Mitnick, a resident of the San Fernando Valley.

Mitnick was sentenced in June to nearly two years in prison for violating parole on a 1988 computer fraud conviction and using stolen cellular phone numbers to dial into computer databases.

He has pleaded not guilty to 25 counts of computer and wire fraud in another case and has been jailed in Los Angeles since his 1995 arrest in North Carolina. He is accused of damaging computers, stealing millions of dollars in software from high-tech companies and using stolen computer passwords during a three-year hacking spree that began in 1992.

In March, Mitnick was denied a request to use a computer in his jail cell.

His imprisonment has been a cause celebre in the hacker community.

``Do you have nightmares about helping imprison Kevin?'' they wrote on the Times site. ``Knowing that your lies and deceit helped bring down this injustice?''

Nielson said Markoff had been the target of hackers before, but there had been no attacks in ``quite a while.''

HFG buried additional comments within the source code.
