H.J. HEINZ ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF CAIRO FOODS INDUSTRIES
CAIRO, Egypt, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- H.J. Heinz Company (HNZ) today announced the formation of Cairo Foods Industries SAE and officially opened a newly constructed tomato products factory here.
Cairo Foods and the plant will be operated under a joint venture agreement between Heinz and Kuwait Foods Company.
The factory, a 54,900-square-foot facility, is located 25 miles southwest of downtown Cairo and near the Great Pyramids of Giza. Initial production will be of ketchup and various other sauces under both the Heinz brand and the Americana name, the flagship line of Kuwait Foods Company.
Future plans call for the addition of processing lines for tomato concentrates and pastes, mayonnaise, mustard and salad cream.
"We selected Egypt for this venture because of its abundance of agricultural resources," noted Anthony J.F. O'Reilly, Heinz chairman, president and chief executive officer. "The delta of the Nile River provides a lush farming region, where three crops of tomatoes may be grown each year. Egypt's annual harvest of fresh tomatoes -- 4.5 million tons -- equals the total output of all other Arab nations combined and is second only to California, which grows 8 million tons."
In addition to processing tomato products, Cairo Foods is contributing to tomato growing and harvesting practices in the delta by introducing new tomato breeds and hybrids specifically developed for Egypt.
Kuwait Foods Company is a major Middle Eastern food group engaged in a wide range of activities, including fast food, meat processing and supermarkets.
