H.B. FULLER COMPANY TO DISCONTINUE SOLVENT ADHESIVES WHERE ABUSED AS INHALANTS

H.B. FULLER COMPANY TO DISCONTINUE SOLVENT ADHESIVES
 WHERE ABUSED AS INHALANTS
ST. PAUL, Minn., July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- At its regularly scheduled meeting yesterday, the H.B. Fuller Company (NASDAQ: FULL) board of directors unaminously passed a policy resolution calling for the company to discontinue sales of solvent adhesives wherever those products are known to be abused as inhalants.
The decision follows an extended series of past actions by the company in response to the abuse and misuse of solvent-based adhesives by street children in Central America. Those efforts have included product warning labels, abuse prevention education, increased distribution controls and, most importantly, programs aimed at providing solutions to the real issue -- street children and the conditions that foster their use of drugs.
The company also has studied deterrent additives and worked to develop alternative adhesive formulations; to date, none have proven acceptable to the company. Until alternative adhesives can be developed that effectively prevent product abuse and misuse, the H.B. Fuller Company board has decided the company will discontinue its production of solvent adhesives where they are known to be abused.
At the same time, the company will continue to support and press for organized social solutions to the problem of inhalant abuse by street children.
In announcing the policy decision, H.B. Fuller Company President Walter Kissling said, "We have tried consistently to raise public awareness about the tragic social issue, to focus public attention on the human condition that needs to be addressed: saving the children. Solvent abuse is not a product issue, it is a human issue. As a company involved in its communities, we actively support programs that can change the lives of these children and we will continue to do so."
H.B. Fuller is a worldwide manufacturer and marketer of specialty chemical products, including adhesives, sealants, coatings, paints, waxes and sanitation chemicals, with fiscal 1991 sales of $853 million.
