 H.A. WAGNER TO BECOME CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF AIR PRODUCTS ON MAY 1, 1992; CHAIRMAN AND CEO DEXTER F. BAKER TO RETIRE
 ALLENTOWN, Pa., March 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE: APD) announced today that its board of directors has elected H.A. Wagner to succeed Dexter F. Baker as chairman of the board and chief executive officer, effective May 1, 1992.
 The appointment will coincide with the retirement of Baker, who will be 65 years old in April, the normal retirement age for officers at Air Products. Baker will continue as a member of the Air Products board of directors and chairman of the board's Executive Committee.
 Baker, who also is the current chairman of the National Association of Manufacturers, has served as Air Products chairman and CEO since December 1986. Wagner has been president and chief operating officer since July 1991. Wagner, who will retain his position as president, will become only the fourth CEO in the 52-year history of the company.
 Commenting on the appointment of Wagner, Baker said, "'Hap' Wagner and I have worked together for many years along with most of Air Products' senior management team. Hap's 30-year career with the company has been exceptional, including his contributions in developing our company's global strategies and in executing them as our president. Almost a third of his service with Air Products has been in international management positions, including president of our European operations. In addition, Hap's direct senior management experience in our two largest businesses, gases and chemicals, has positioned him to lead Air Products to continued growth in the U.S. and around the world."
 Baker added, "Hap Wagner is fortunate, as I have been, to be supported by an outstanding management team, backed up by a quality- oriented worldwide family of skilled and dedicated employees."
 Wagner joined Air Products' applied research and development department in 1963 and then served in various sales and management positions, including 10 years in Europe as general manager of industrial gases. In 1981, he became vice president-Sales of the U.S. Industrial Gas Division. The following year he was named vice president, Corporate Planning and in 1987, he assumed the position of vice president-Business Divisions, Chemicals Group. In 1988, Wagner returned to Europe as president, Air Products Europe. He was appointed executive vice president-Gases and Equipment in 1990 and was elected to Air Products' board of directors in January 1991. He became president and chief operating officer in July 1991.
 Wagner was born in 1935. He received a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Stanford University in 1958 and an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1963. Wagner served from 1958 to 1961 as an officer in the Strategic Air Command, U.S. Air Force. He completed the Stanford Executive Program in 1982. Wagner serves on the board of trustees of the Manufacturers' Alliance for Productivity and Innovation (MAPI).
 Air Products is a leading international supplier of industrial gases and related equipment, intermediate and specialty chemicals, and environmental and energy systems. The company has annual sales of $3 billion, operations in 29 countries, and headquarters near Allentown.
