Gutted restaurant may reopen soon.

A POPULAR restaurant in Muharraq that was gutted by fire could re-open at the end of the month.

Several people had to be evacuated from the Yum Yum Tree branch near Bahrain International Airport after the blaze on December 27.

It happened at around 9.30pm and forced emergency crews to evacuate around 100 people from the Oasis Mall next door as a precaution.

No one was injured but eight fire engines took around half an hour to extinguish the blaze.

"The problem seems to have come from the exhaust fan," said area councillor Khalid Bu Unuq.

"There's about 70 per cent damage to the property as a result of the fire.

"They're currently working on reconstructing the damage and hope to open by the end of January."

Despite repeated attempts, Yum Yum Tree officials could not be reached for comment, but sources said work was taking place around the clock to fix the damage.

The fire is the second blaze to hit the company in less than a year.

A blaze at the Yum Yum Tree branch in Sanad last February caused up

to BD50,000 of damage, management confirmed.

It was also understood to have started because of a short circuit in an exhaust fan.
