Gustavus Reed Ide, Jr., 91.

WESTBOROUGH Gustavus Reed Ide, Jr., 91, of Westborough MA died Friday, September 24, 2010. He is survived by Priscilla (Cranston) Ide, his wife of 63 years.

Born in East Providence RI, he was the son of Gustavus R. and Florence (Thornton) Ide. He was educated in the public schools of East Providence, and was a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and Worcester Polytechnic Institute's School of Industrial Management.

During World War II, Ide served in the U.S. Navy, and was assigned to the destroyer U.S.S. Glennon during the invasion of Normandy.

Following the war, he returned to his previous employment with the New England Electric System (now National Grid). He retired after a 49-year career.

The Ides were 62-year members of Old Sturbridge Village. Throughout his life Ide, together with his wife, pursued an avid interest in locating and documenting 18th and 19th century New England inns and taverns. The record they created, together with photographs the Ides took during their research, was donated to Old Sturbridge Village.

He was also a member of the Rhode Island Historical Society and the New England Historic Genealogical Society.

In addition to his wife, he is also survived by two sons, Gustavus Reed Ide, III of Holland MA; and Mark Cranston Ide and his wife Cynthia (Wyman) of North Grafton MA; two grandchildren, Ashley Elizabeth Ide and Mark Cranston Ide, Jr. both of North Grafton MA.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ide/Cranston Memorial Fund, c/o the Rhode Island Historical Society, 110 Benevolent St., Providence RI 02906, or the Ide/Cranston Memorial Fund, c/o the New England Historic Genealogical Society, 99 Newbury Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02116.

Arrangements are being handled by Rand Harper-Pickering Funeral Home in Westborough MA.
